MIG Welding

How to Identify Quality Metal Inert Gas Welding

MIG welding, also known as metal inert gas welding, commonly appears in manufacturing as a means of conjoining metals. This method is one of the simplest options for welding components and the first new welders learn. However, despite its simplicity, problems can occur. When ordering MIG welding for your projects, learn to look for signs of quality in the finished product to ensure that you have chosen the right company to perform your MIG welding services

Uniformity

A good weld, regardless of the type, should have a uniform appearance along the entire line. The weld’s width must be the same throughout, as its penetration into the metal.

Lack of uniformity or poor penetration could create weak spots in the weld, which may compromise the integrity of the joint. Both issues may occur from improper application of the weld. For instance, poor penetration can happen when the welder does not use a high enough current or travels too slow along the joint when creating the weld.

No Gas Pockets

A good MIG weld will not have gas pockets in it. These pockets increase the porosity of the weld and reduce its strength. Often, the cause of pockets comes from too much atmospheric air entering the welding area. This may happen when welding occurs in a breezy area or if too little shielding gas flows to the weld.

Even Ripples

The ripples on the weld should have an even appearance spread into the base. There should not be areas with excessive or too little weld material. Plus, you shouldn’t see cracks along the weld. A high skill level from the welder creates the evenest ripples and strongest results.
